Its interior is charged with nitrogen under high pressure. Unlike standard coil springs, the non locking gas spring features a characteristic force curve that is exceptionally flat and almost linear. This allows for a uniform and comfortable adjustment or pivoting action. A further benefit compared to mechanical springs is its built-in damping capability. When mounted with the piston rod pointing downward, the extension stroke first passes through a gas chamber and then an oil chamber. The oil provides damping, which significantly reduces the speed of movement. The high-pressure nitrogen exerts equal force on the differing surface areas of the piston. This differential creates an extending force, the magnitude of which is determined by the initial gas charge pressure.
