This is achieved by a unique piston design that separates the gas and oil chambers of the spring.Our locking gas springs make it possible to variably lock them in any stroke position, whether elastically (“spring-loaded”) or rigidly. Types of Locking Gas Springs
Flexible Locking Gas Spring
(Elastic) Flexible Locking gas springs incorporate a mechanism enabling the user to “lock” the rod at any point in its travel while allowing the rod to flex when the load exceeds specified limits. When the valve is open, the gas spring works as a standard gas spring. If the valve is closed, it prevents the gas flowing between the two sides of the piston. As a result, after a minimal piston displacement, a force-balance occurs on both sides of the piston, so the piston will be locked in the given position. Since there is a compressible gas on both sides of the piston, locking is flexible.
Rigid in Compression Locking Gas Spring
Our Rigid in Compression Locking gas springs incorporate a mechanism enabling the user to “lock” the rod at any point in its travel. As the name suggests, these springs are fully rigid when subjected to compressive forces when locked, while allowing the rod to flex when subjected to tensile loads which exceed specified limits. These limits are controlled by parameters such as the rod size, the body size and the P1 force.
Rigid in Extension Locking Gas Spring
As the name implies this type of lockable gas spring will be rigid in the locked position when force is applied in the extension direction. In compression there will be some small movement of the shaft based on the amount of load applied. When the load is removed the shaft will return to the position at which it was locked. The gas spring can be mounted vertically or horizontally.
